I’m Krista Timeus Cerezo, a Guatemalan writer based in Barcelona. My first novel, SPLIT FRUIT, is the story of a young, privileged woman whose future unravels when her only brother dies, setting her up to inherit their family’s coffee estate in Guatemala just as civil war erupts in the early 1980s.

My short fiction is populated by people living in exile, whether by choice or circumstance. Characters are haunted, not only by the places and people they’ve left behind, but also by past versions of themselves. Displaced, they ask themselves, How did we get here? Where do we belong?  And how do we build a new home in a world that we cannot recognize? My stories have appeared in Puerto del Sol, On the Run Magazine, and AGNI. I’m a member of the National Book Critics Circle, with bylines in AGNI’s Reverb, World Literature Review, Words Without Borders, and elsewhere, writing about literature that explores how politics shapes and devastates ordinary people’s lives.
